Massachusetts laws have changed with regard to sole proprietors and partnerships.

You need to obtain a valid Certificate of Insurance from you independent contractors and subcontractors stating the sole proprietor and/or partners have elected coverage under the Workers' Compensation coverage. If you do not obtain these Certificates, you may be liable for independent contractors and subcontractors, sole proprietors or members of partnerships you hire who have coverage for their own employees, but have elected not to purchase coverage on themselves. Without the proper evidence, your Workers' Compensation carrier could charge your for their payroll at audit.
